Central Electoral Commission adopted a decision whereby it drew the attention of the General Prosecutor’s Office towards breaches of electoral legislation by subordinate structures (Taraclia prosecutor’s office). CEC decision follows an address by the People’s Republican Party, against whose candidate for district council a criminal case was opened without the assent of the electoral council, as per art. 46 par.(5) of the Electoral Code.
CEC has already warned several electoral contestants not to use images of central and local public institutions in their campaign materials. Mass media and the Audiovisual Coordinating Council were requested to observe relevant instructions.
Sociological Centre “Socio-Inform” presented the results of a poll organised on 11–21 May 2007, through telephone and open interviews. The sample includes 1435, maximum admissible error — 3%. Respondents were asked if they would participate in the voting on 3 June 2007 and for which of the candidates for general mayor of Chisinau municipality they would vote. According to results, about 79% of respondents intend to attend the voting, and their voting preferences in terms of the candidates for capital mayor are as follows:
A previous poll — Public Opinion Barometer (May 2007), rated favourites differently: Veaceslav Iordan (34.2%); Dorin Chirtoaca (24.2%); Vladimir Filat (8.9%); Dumitru Braghis (8.4%); Alexandru Corduneanu (6.7%); Leonid Bujor (5.3%); Eduard Musuc (5.2%); Zinovia Zorin (2.6%); Corneliu Ciurea (2.3%); Mihai Roscovan (1.4%); Valentin Krilov (0.8%).
Central Electoral Commission accredited as international observers for the general local elections representatives of the National Democratic Institute for International Relations, (USA) and OSCE/ODIHR. National observers were accredited on behalf of the Eurasia Moldova Foundation, Association for Participatory Democracy “ADEPT” and the League for the Defence of Human Rights in Moldova “LADOM”; the latter organisation has accredited the largest number of short term observers — 1,400 individuals.
