• Members of the European Parliament (EP) have told the audience at a press conference that the election campaign legitimacy will be proved on Election Day and that concerns from the previous election campaigns are valid. At the same time, Marianne Mikko, co-chair of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, has forecast that the most possible conclusion of the electoral observers would be that elections are free and fair, but not entirely. According to mass media, European MPs could not understand the ruling party representatives’ refusal to participate in electoral debates, as such approaches in countries with strong democratic traditions would be highly condemned by the public. MPs have also mentioned that organization of elections by the Central Electoral Commission is satisfactory and was fair in examining of appeals. (after Basa-press)

• League for the Protection of Human Rights (LADOM, Association of Independent Press (API) and Independent Journalism Centre (CIJ) presented, within the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections Coalition 2007, the results of the past election monitoring reports:

  1. LADOM report covers the period 10–30 May 2007 and states certain positive trends: correct CEC activity; training of electoral officers; increase in the efficiency of public debates in the media. Negative trends in the electoral process were similar to trends registered previously: utilization of administrative resources; intimidation of opposition electoral contestants; favouring by the central administration of one contestant; lack of transparency in contestants’ funding; unauthorized placing of electoral campaign materials; protracted examination of requests and complaints.
  2. The API-CIJ report covers 17–27 May 2007 and states that the public media (TV Moldova 1 and Radio Moldova) and certain private electronic media (NIT, Antena C) have advantaged the ruling party, which has been confirmed by the Audiovisual Coordinating Council. The N4 TV Station has adopted the presented news without damaging the image of the ruling party, and the Euro TV station had sided with the People’s Christian Democratic Party during its dispute with the Party of Communists. On the other hand, PRO TV, TV 7 and Radio Vocea Basarabiei have granted access to opposition candidates and have presented critical views. The press has taken a neutral side, except for the former governmental publications, which have reflected the activity of authorities only in a positive way and have made attacks against some opposition candidates.
