• The Central Electoral Commission of the Administrative Territorial Unit (ATU) Gagauzia held an ordinary sitting on February 4 and considered new applications on registration of candidates for the People’s Assembly. Gagauz CEC chairman Piotr Ivanov noted that 12 candidates to the People’s Assembly have been registered at the sitting. The deadline for candidates to submit the documents needed for the registration has been earlier established — February 14, before 17.00.

  As many as 115 candidates have been registered until February 4, including 65 independents and 50 competitors on behalf of political parties. At least two candidates have been already registered in every district, and five candidates have been registered in each of the following districts: Desghinja, Chirsovo, Ciadir-Lunga, Baurciu, and Cazaclia. Given the high number of candidates to the People’s Assembly, the race will be fierce. The restrained terms are specifics of the current electoral campaign.

• The Gagauz CEC made a number of decisions at the sitting, indicating the key moments for the conduct of electoral campaign, in particular:
  • Borders of polling stations in all 35 districts of Gagauzia have been confirmed;
  • The size of the electoral fund needed by candidates to the People’s Assembly to hold the electoral campaign has been established. The fund will count for 35,000 lei;
  • The regulation on coverage of the electoral campaign by mass media has been approved. The mass media willing to participate in the pre-electoral campaign has already requested the CEC of Gagauzia, and therefore, a decision was made in this respect;
  • The initial restriction on residence term for candidates in a district has been lifted.

• The problem of financing the electoral campaign has been discussed and as much as 1,200,000 lei will be spent for this purpose.

• The CEC of Gagauzia has requested the CEC of the Republic of Moldova to accredit international observers to monitor the electoral campaign in ATU Gagauzia.
