Mr. Formuzal said that a fair monitoring of the electoral process is very important for authorities and the work of international observers would help affirming the democratic image of Gagauzia built at the 2006 elections of the Governor. - The elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia could be compromised because of the lack of funds, reads a statement by members of the People’s Assembly Presidium released on February 8, 2008. It accuses the Governor of the Gagauz autonomy of not allocating funds for the organisation and conduct of elections. According to sources in the press service of the Comrat Executive, the Governor of Gagauzia demanded funds from the Ministry of Finance of Moldova in November 2007, but he failed to resolve this problem with the prime minister and chairman of the Parliament. The sources noted that the statement concerned was released by a group of lawmakers, not by the People’s Assembly Presidium, and added that there were cases when many presidium members had neither signed such declarations, nor participated in related talks (according to INFOTAG news agency)
