- Another 16 candidates
- First international observers
- The Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia has registered another 16 candidates for the People’s Assembly (8 candidates in the district of Comrat, 2 candidates in the district of Ceadir-Lunga, and another 6 in the district of Vulcanesti). So far, 131 candidates have been registered to compete for the 35 seats in the Gagauz autonomy, and four days are left until the application deadline. According to the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia, Piotr Ivanov, the candidates include a representative of the European Action Movement, which became the 9th political entity to participate in the March 16 elections. Parties have nominated 60 contestants and 71 persons have been registered as independent candidates. February 14, 17:00 o’clock is the deadline for the nomination of candidates, and the CEC of Gagauzia shall make decisions until February 21, 2008.
- Earlier, the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Moldova has accredited the first foreign observers at the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia; they represent the National Democratic Institute, an organisation advising the U.S. Democratic Party which has an official representation in Chisinau (according to a press release by Noutati-Moldova news agency).
