- Being requested by the leadership of the Administrative Territorial Unit Gagauzia, the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Moldova has invited international organisations to deploy observers to monitor the elections for the People’s Assembly of the autonomy. According to CEC Secretary Iurie Ciocan, the central electoral body must provide methodological and information assistance to the territorial commission and, for this reason, models of instructions, forms for the March 16, 2008 elections have been presented. At the same time, the Chisinau CEC cannot provide financial assistance for the elections in the autonomy because it lacks the demanded funds (about 1.3 million lei). - Ivan Ceban, a candidate to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, has suddenly died because of pneumonia-related complications, according to reports. Ceban was a well-known activist in the Gagauz autonomy; he was member of several legislatures and was deputy chairman in the former assembly.
