- Marian, Lupu, speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, visited the city of Ceadir-Lunga on February 25, 2008 and met residents there. Mr. Lupu was frank that his visit was linked to the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and noted that such meetings will repeat, because in his quality of head of the Parliament, he cares who will be the members of the new People’s Assembly. He stressed that the Moldovan Parliament and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia have developed tight relations and any destructive trends should be prevented in future, and invited electors to make a conscious choice, so that to elect a major, strong team for the People’s Assembly. - The Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT has launched a web on elections for the People’s Assembly as part of the portal www.alegeri.md. It provides general information in three languages (Romanian, Russian and English) about the scheduled scrutiny, previous elections for the People’s Assembly, status and competences of the Assembly, relevant regulations, laws of the Republic of Moldova, acts adopted by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, international regulations and recommendations by specialised bodies. Information about electoral candidates, civic education and other useful reports will be published on the website during the electoral campaign, in order to inform the public, monitor and help ensuring a correct electoral process. Observers representing the League for the Protection of Human Rights (LPHR) have started monitoring the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, with several LPHR observers working permanently and approximately 80 representatives being expected to monitor the voting.
- A sitting of the committee on political stability, economic, demographic and ecological security of ATU Gagauzia (a body advising the Gagauz Governor) has considered issues related to the financing of elections for the People’s Assembly. It was decided that the election financing problem will be tackled at an extraordinary meeting with mayors and heads of local councils from UTA Gagauzia. Also, the Finance Directorate of the Executive Committee is due to examine budgetary plans for administrative needs, in order to find funds for the elections.
