- Financing problem resolved half
- Cooperation agreement between Gagauzia and Moscow on the eve of elections
- According to the press service of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia (PAG), a special sitting has considered the issue of “finances from the PAG reserve fund for the organisation and conduct of the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.” A press release said that, for diverse reasons, the Executive Committee of Gagauzia did not resolve within two months the problem of funding of the electoral campaign for the election of members of the People’s Assembly. In these conditions, the People’s Assembly and the CEC of Gagauzia have called upon the Government and CEC of Moldova to provide the funds needed to organise and conduct the elections. The Moldovan Government has proposed diverse solutions to this problem. It recommended the Executive of Gagauzia to contract a zero-quota credit maturing this year. But the Executive of Gagauzia has turned down any offer by central authorities for unclear reasons, though it failed to find an election funding solution. Given the danger to undermine a political action of major importance — jeopardising the elections for the People’s Assembly — the incumbent chairman of the People’s Assembly, S. Esir, has decided to convoke a special sitting of his parliament. The sitting decided to allocate 600,000 lei from the reserve fund of the Assembly to the CEC of Gagauzia in order to organise and conduct the elections. Also, the People’s Assembly instructed the Gagauz Executive to urgently find another 600,000 lei needed to conduct the elections for the People’s Assembly. (According to Vesti Gagauzii)
- According to the NIKA-Press Agency, a delegation representing the Executive Committee of Gagauzia is expected to visit Moscow. The visit aims at signing a long-term agreement on economic and cultural cooperation with the Moscow Executive. According to preliminary data, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Gagauz Governor Mihail Formuzal will sign the document on March 6. The agreement is expected to bring more points to people’s patriots (candidates supported by the United Gagauzia Movement) who intend to win a sufficient number of mandates in order to build a legislative majority. Chisinau, which knows the plans of the Comrat Executive, has raised certain reservations. According to informal reports, representatives of the central Government have recommended Governor Formuzal to plan his visit to Moscow after the electoral campaign in the Gagauz region.
