• According to CEC chairman Piotr Ivanov, the 600,000 lei transferred to the commission are not enough because so far expenses are estimated at 900,000 lei. In the event the rest of the necessary amount is not allocated, certain rounds of the electoral process will be jeopardised. The Gagauz CEC is holding training seminars for electoral bodies from the three districts of the Administrative Territorial Unit Gagauzia (Comrat, Ceadir-Lunga and Vulcanesti). The voters’ rolls include more than 85,000 persons and the lists of electoral candidates have been published and delivered to electoral bodies. Two competitors have recently withdrawn from the electoral race, so that 159 persons run for the 35 mandates. The activism of observers has increased and representatives of the nongovernmental organisations LPHRM, Euro-Atlantic Initiative and of the media (PRO TV Chisinau) have been accredited.

• According to the presidential press service, President Vladimir Voronin has met the deputy secretary of the Russian Supreme Security Council, Yuri Zubakov and discussed among others the shipment of the Russian humanitarian aid to Moldova to attenuate consequences of the 2007 drought. The sides regretted that this issue has become the subject of artificial politicising, with President Voronin calling for the rapid delivery of the Russian humanitarian aid to Moldova, including to the Gagauz autonomy. Zubakov told Voronin that the humanitarian aid is being shipped by trains.

  The United Gagauzia Movement has asked the Moldovan leadership to intervene in order to receive the humanitarian aid needed by Gagauz population. According to a statement by this movement, the aid concerned shall be declared humanitarian under a decision by the commission for humanitarian aid, accordingly to documents submitted on February 26, 2008. The commission did not consider this issue at a February 28 sitting and, therefore, the shipment of the humanitarian aid was impossible. (According to www.edingagauz.com)
