- Appeal by Yedinaya Gagauzia Movement
- Premier’s visit to Gagauzia
- The Yedinaya Gagauzia Movement held a congress in Comrat on March 11, which brought together approximately 500 delegates from all localities of the Gagauz autonomy. The congress unanimously adopted an appeal to the Moldovan leadership, raising concern with attitude of state authorities towards residents of Gagauzia: “Residents of Gagauzia self-identify as citizens of Moldova who have equal rights like others. Us, like other fellows, we want the peace and prosperity of the Homeland, investment inflows, new productions and jobs,” reads the appeal. Yedinaya Gagauzia notes that residents of Gagauzia are preoccupied with “sovereignty and integrity of their Homeland,” Bashkan (Governor) Mihail Formuzal has expressed the sincere wish of the Gagauz people to live in peace and understanding with central authorities of Moldova, but “developments reveal that the cooperation hand of the Gagauz administration is ignored by central authorities” who “do not allocate any coin to develop the language, the national culture, publish books by Gagauz writers and poets.” The movement underlined that residents of Gagauzia do not have representatives in the Moldovan leadership, being deprived of the “possibility to influence the state policy.” Yedinaya Gagauzia invited Moldovan authorities on behalf of Gagauz people to leave party and other interests and “to exclusively follow the state principles, which stipulate equal respect for all citizens, regardless of their national, party and other membership.” Yedinaya Gagauzia supports Governor Mihail Formuzal and it is credited with the greatest chances to win the March 16 elections. - Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev was on a working visit to the Administrative Territorial Unit Gagauzia on Tuesday and collected facts about the spring agricultural campaign at farms in the villages of Copceac and Congaz. He said that Gagauzia has a big industrial and agricultural potential and it shall do its best to fully use this potential. Tarlev assured that the Government will continue supporting the economic development of the region, implementation of investment projects, and called for a more active participation of competent officials in this process. Observers notice that the premier’s visit comes shortly after president and speaker of Moldova have visited Gagauzia, with the latter saying that his visit was linked to the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and promising that “such visits will continue.”
