- Satisfactory turnout
- Unimportant breaches
- Independents are favourites
- The medium turnout of voters at the elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia was 60.47 percent, and it oscillated between 40 percent and 80 percent in some localities. The turnout of electors in all electoral districts exceeded 1/3 of the number of electors included in voters’ rolls. General data on participation are the following:
- Number of voters included in voters’ rolls — 85,121 people;
- Number of voters included in additional voters’ rolls — 6,615 people;
- Number of voters who received ballot papers — 56,506 people;
- Number of voters who participate in the voting — 55,472 people;
- Number of invalid ballots — 557 votes.
The runoff voting is scheduled for March 30 and the first two leading candidates will continue competing in the districts concerned.
- It was noted at a news conference convoked by the observation delegation on behalf of the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities and Committee of Regions that the voting was generally positive, but there were some shortcomings, in particular:
- Many electors were included in additional voters’ rolls;
- Several persons entered the secret ballot booth at the same time (“family voting”);
- Polling stations were not located on ground floor;
- Ballot paper was transparent and that this allowed the voter’s choice to be deduced;
- Difficult funding of elections, and others.
- Eighteen members of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia were elected in the 1st round of the elections as follows:
- 12 independent candidates (IC);
- 3 members on behalf of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM);
- 2 members on behalf of the Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM);
- 1 member one behalf of the Ravnopravye Movement (RM);
- No members were elected on behalf of the Socialist Party of Moldova (SPM);
- No members were elected on behalf of the Agrarian Party of Moldova (APM).
Candidates who will participate in the runoff voting represent as follows:
- 22 ICs;
- 8 candidates on behalf of PCRM;
- 2 candidates on behalf of RM;
- 1 candidate on behalf of APM;
- 1 candidate on behalf of SPM.
