The first elections for the People’s Assembly of the Gagauz autonomy took place on May 28, 1995. As many as 106 contestants participated in the electoral race representing:
Twenty-eight out of 35 members of the People’s Assembly were elected in the first round of the scrutiny. Another 6 members were elected in the runoff vote on June 11, 1995. The elections in the District # 27 Dezghingea were invalidated.
The representation in the People’s Assembly was as follows:
Piotr Pashali was elected chairman of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.
The elections for the second legislature of the People’s Assembly took place on August 22, 1999. Ten out of 201 candidates were elected in the first round of the scrutiny. Another 24 members of the People’s Assembly were elected in the runoff vote on September 5, 1999. Mihail Kendighelean was elected chairman of the People’s Assembly and Ivan Kristioglo succeeded him in 2002.
The elections for the third legislature of the People’s Assembly took place on November 16, 2003. As many as 185 candidates were registered for the electoral race and they represented as follows:
Fourteen out of 185 candidates who competed for the 35 mandates were elected in the first round of the scrutiny, in particular, eight on behalf of the Party of Communists and six independent candidates. The runoff vote took place on December 1.
Finally, the mandates were distributed as follows:
Communist lawmakers together with seven independent legislators formed a majority called “For A Prosperous Gagauzia In A Renewed Moldova”. Stepan Esir was elected chairman of the People’s Assembly.
